Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile V5555 is nice and workable laptop for Linux users. It served me for 2 years. I cannot say it is bad, as I am heavy notebook user. But sound did burn over the time, so I could not hear anything unless when using headset, optical drive stopped working long ago, although I have not used it more than 20-50 times. Laptop collects my dirt and hair, so I have to occasionally vacuum clean it. But all in all, during my travels and heavy business use, it is yet in function. This page I write over Fujitsu Esprimo Mobile V5555.
I have been using this laptop with Debian GNU/Linux lenny.

Device | Compatibility | Comments |
---|---|---|
Processor | Yes | |
Screen | Yes | LCD works although not as bright I wish |
HDD | Yes | After 2 years, hard drive is reliable. |
Optical Drive | Yes | Compatible, but it stopped probably due to travelling. |
Graphics | Partial | VESA Graphics does not give the full resolution, and there is no original SIS driver for graphics card SIS 771/671, but there is SIS 771/671 driver unsupported by any distribution, which one has to download and hopefully compile or install binaries. After every Linux update, one has to take care to install the driver again. It works, only with 2D, as 3D driver is not available. |
Sound | Yes | Sound burnt out after 2 years of mild usage. |
Ethernet | Yes | |
Wireless | Yes | |
USB | Yes |
This laptop is nice for business users with knowledge on how to install the graphic driver. It stopped working for me after just one week, and I had to send it back for replacement. After the replacement laptop has been working reliably. It collects easily a lot of dust, sound stopped working it is burnt out, and due to constant updates of Linux, I had to replace this one with new laptop. And I intend to use this one as kind of file server with FreeNAS.
It is yet a great laptop which brought me a lot of money, but it is me, it all depends who you are and for what you use your laptop. I am selling gold and I gained a lot of clients by using exactly this laptop.
Discussion
