Loaded Fedora Core 12 64 Bit. #1 SMP Wed Dec 9 10:46:22 EST 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
and had to load the intel iwlwifi driver from the compat-wireless-2-1.6 distro
and loaded acpi4asus-0.41 and got all the hot keys working.
Looking for info to get backlight on keyboard working.
The webcam and Card reader also work.
Ubuntu 9.10
It works almost perfect
For the keyboard backlight in kernel <2.6.32 use this thread from post #7 and next from kernel 2.6.32 keyboard backlight should work (source )
Wireless connection works not so good, to improve performance you should install 'linux-backports-modules-wireless-karmic-generic' package.
openSuse 11.3
Keyboard backlight works well out-of-the-box with kernel 2.6.34, but stops to work after Suspend. Solution - reload asus_laptop module: modprobe -r asus_laptop && modprobe asus_laptop.
Wi-fi doesn't work stable with Gnome+NetworkManager+DIR-300 router with WPA and DHCP, so finally I installed wicd and assigned static IP.

You can enter a summary of how well the Asus U50Vg works with Linux here.
Fedora Core 12 works great on the U50vg. I am dual booting linux and Vista
Used Pmagic to resize the partition and delete the d: partition. Everything seems stable
and have encountered no problems other than getting the right wireless configuration created.
With ubuntu 9.10 works not bad, with some adjustment works perfect.

My U50Vg has neither lights in touchpad nor bluetooth radio. I installed 64 bit Ubuntu 10.10 and everything I have tested, with the exception of the keyboard backlighting, works without tweaking. I have not tested the external display, e-sata ports or the express-card slot. The flash memory card reader, usb ports, wired and wireless networking, work fine, the battery and AC adapter are detected, even skype works with video without screwing around.

The keyboard backlighting is an easy fix- see here:
All you do is add the ppa, then download and install the package asus-kbd-backlight
It takes 30 seconds and works perfectly.

All the keyboard function keys work except fn+F9 which is supposed to toggle the touchpad, and the fn+A which is supposed to toggle auto brightness.

Currently dual booting win 7 and 10.10. About to wipe win 7 and go ubuntu 10.10 all the way!

You can make the keyboard lights work, granted you and google translate can work the forum out. I honestly don't see why there isn't an english version for it.

The led lights that follow your finger on the touchpad will always get stuck in an about half way through position and it will be like that untill you reboot the laptop. It doesn't set back functionality, you can still use the tp, but it's an eyesore.

The boot changes for worse after installing the nvidia drivers.

The fan sometimes goes crazy. You turn the laptop on and it just goes berserk on max but if you put your hand to it you can feel that it's cold air it pushes out, so it's unnecessary. Also something that can only be fixed by rebooting.

Other then these, Ubuntu 10.10 works as a charm, but these small setbacks ruin it for me.
